Sunan an-Nasa'i al-Kubra 5260
Zakariyyā b. Yaḥyá > Abū Muṣʿab > al-Mughīrah b. ʿAbd al-Raḥman > al-Juʿayd b. ʿAbd al-Raḥman > al-Sāʾib b. Yazīd
We used to strike the drunks with our hands, shoes, clothes (by twisting it into the shape of lashes) during the lifetime of the Prophet, Abu Bakr and the early part of ʿUmar's caliphate. But during the last period of ʿUmar's caliphate, he used to give the drunk forty lashes; and when drunks became mischievous and disobedient, he used to scourge them eighty lashes.
أَخْبَرَنَا زَكَرِيَّا بْنُ يَحْيَى قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو مُصْعَبٍ عَنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ عَنِ الْجُعَيْدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ عَنِ السَّائِبِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ قَالَ
«كُنَّا نُؤْتَى بِالشَّارِبِ فِي عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَعَهْدِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ وَصَدْرًا مِنْ إِمَارَةِ عُمَرَ فَنَقُومُ إِلَيْهِ فَنَضْرِبُهُ بِأَيْدِينَا وَأَرْدِيَتِنَا وَنِعَالِنَا حَتَّى كَانَ وَسَطَ إِمَارَةِ عُمَرَ فَجَلَدَ فِيهَا أَرْبَعِينَ حَتَّى إِذَا عَتَوْا وَفَسَقُوا جُلِدَ فِيهَا ثَمَانِينَ»
