When anyone amongst you wakes up from sleep, he must not put his hand in the utensil till he has washed it three times, for he does not know where his hand was during the night.

أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مُعَاوِيَةَ الْقُرَشِيُّ أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو مُحَمَّدٍ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْقَاسِمِ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ شُعَيْبِ بْنِ عَلِيِّ بْنِ سِنَانٍ النَّسَائِيُّ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَالَ «إِذَا اسْتَيْقَظَ أَحَدُكُمْ مِنْ نَوْمِهِ فَلَا يَغْمِسْ يَدَهُ فِي وَضُوئِهِ حَتَّى يَغْسِلَهَا ثَلَاثًا فَإِنَّهُ لَا يَدْرِي حَيْثُ بَاتَتْ يَدُهُ»

Isḥāq b. Ibrāhīm And Qutaybah b. Saʿīd > Jarīr > Manṣūr > Abū Wāʾil > Ḥudhayfah

Whenever the Prophet ﷺ got up at night, he used to clean his mouth with Siwak.

أَخْبَرَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَقُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ جَرِيرٍ عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ عَنْ حُذَيْفَةَ قَالَ

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِذَا قَامَ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ «يَشُوصُ فَاهُ بِالسِّوَاكِ»

Aḥmad b. ʿAbdah al-Baṣrī > Ḥammād > Ghaylān > Abū Burdah > Abū Mūsá

"I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when he was using the Siwak, and the end of the Siwak was on his toungue, and he was saying, "'A','a'."

أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَبْدَةَ الْبَصْرِيُّ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا حَمَّادٌ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا غَيْلَانَ عَنْ أَبِي بُرْدَةَ عَنْ أَبِي مُوسَى قَالَ

دَخَلْتُ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَهُوَ يَسْتَنُّ وَطَرَفُ السِّوَاكِ عَلَى لِسَانِهِ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ «عَأْ عَأْ»

Ḥumayd b. Masʿadah al-Baṣrī And Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Aʿlá > Yazīd > ʿAbd al-Raḥman b. Abū ʿAtīq from my father > ʿĀʾishah Tuḥaddith

ʿThe siwak is cleansing to the mouth and pleasing to the Lordʿ

أَخْبَرَنَا حُمَيْدُ بْنُ مَسْعَدَةَ الْبَصْرِيُّ وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْأَعْلَى عَنْ يَزِيدَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ أَبِي عَتِيقٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي قَالَ سَمِعْتُ عَائِشَةَ تُحَدِّثُ

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ «السِّوَاكُ مَطْهَرَةٌ لِلْفَمِ مَرْضَاةٌ لِلرَّبِّ»

ʿImrān b. Mūsá And Ḥumayd b. Masʿadah > ʿAbd al-Wārith > Shuʿayb b. al-Ḥabḥāb > Anas b. Mālik

"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'I have indeed urged you with regard to the Siwak.'"

أَخْبَرَنَا عِمْرَانُ بْنُ مُوسَى وَحُمَيْدُ بْنُ مَسْعَدَةَ قَالَا حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَارِثِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا شُعَيْبُ بْنُ الْحَبْحَابِ عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ قَالَ

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «قَدْ أَكْثَرْتُ عَلَيْكُمْ فِي السِّوَاكِ»

Qutaybah b. Saʿīd > Mālik > Abū al-Zinād > al-Aʿraj > Abū Hurayrah

The Prophet ﷺ said: ʿWere it not that it would be too difficult for the ummah, I would have commanded them to use the siwak at the time of every prayer.”

أَخْبَرَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ مَالِكٍ عَنْ أَبِي الزِّنَادِ عَنِ الْأَعْرَجِ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «لَوْلَا أَنْ أَشُقَّ عَلَى أُمَّتِي لَأَمَرْتُهُمْ بِالسِّوَاكِ عِنْدَ كُلِّ صَلَاةٍ»

ʿAlī b. Khashram al-Marwazī > ʿĪsá / Ibn Yūnus > Misʿar > al-Miqdām b. Shurayḥ from his father

"What would the Messenger of Allah ﷺ do as soon as he entered the house?" She replied: "(He would use) the siwak."

أَخْبَرَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ خَشْرَمٍ الْمَرْوَزِيُّ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا عِيسَى يَعْنِي ابْنَ يُونُسَ عَنْ مِسْعَرٍ عَنِ الْمِقْدَامِ بْنِ شُرَيْحٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ

قُلْتُ لِعَائِشَةَ بِأَيِّ شَيْءٍ كَانَ يَبْدَأُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ إِذَا دَخَلَ بَيْتَهُ؟ قَالَتْ بِالسِّوَاكِ

ʿAmr b. ʿAlī > Yaḥyá > Qurrah > Ḥumayd b. Hilāl > Abū Burdah > Abū Mūsá

"I came to the Prophet ﷺ when he was using the Siwak and with me were two men of the Ash'aris - one on my right and the other on my left - who were seeking to be appointed as officials. I said: 'By the One Who sent you as a Prophet with the truth, they did not tell me why they wanted to come with me and I did not realize that they were seeking to be appointed as officials.' And I could see his Siwak beneath his lip, then it slipped and he said: 'We do not' - or; 'We will never appoint as an official anyone who seeks that. Rather you should go.'" So he sent his (Abu Musa) to Yemen, then he sent Mu'adh bin Jabal to go after him - may Allah be pleased with them.

أَخْبَرَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ عَلِيٍّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا قُرَّةُ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي حُمَيْدُ بْنُ هِلَالٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو بُرْدَةَ عَنْ أَبِي مُوسَى قَالَ

دَخَلْتُ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ وَمَعِي رَجُلَانِ مِنَ الْأَشْعَرِيِّينَ أَحَدُهُمَا عَنْ يَمِينِي وَالْآخَرُ عَنْ يَسَارِي وَرَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَسْتَاكُ فَكِلَاهُمَا سَأَلَ الْعَمَلَ قُلْتُ وَالَّذِي بَعَثَكَ بِالْحَقِّ مَا أَطْلَعَانِي عَلَى مَا فِي أَنْفُسِهِمَا وَمَا شَعَرْتُ أَنَّهُمَا يَطْلُبَانِ الْعَمَلَ فَكَأَنِّي أَنْظُرُ إِلَى سِوَاكِهِ تَحْتَ شَفَتِهِ قَلَصَتْ قَالَ «إِنَّا لَا أَوْ لَنْ نَسْتَعْمِلَ عَلَى عَمِلْنَا مَنْ أَرَادَهُ»

"The Fitrah are five: Circumcision, shaving the pubes, plucking the armpit hairs, clipping the nails and taking from the mustache."

أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ الْمُقْرِئُ الْمَكِّيُّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْمُسَيِّبِ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ الْفِطْرَةُ خَمْسٌ الْخِتَانُ وَحَلَقُ الْعَانَةِ وَنَتْفُ الْإِبْطِ وَتَقْلِيمُ الْأَظْفَارِ وَحَلْقُ الشَّارِبِ

al-Ḥārith b. Miskīn > Ibn Wahb > Yūnus > Ibn Shihāb al-Zuhrī > Saʿīd b. al-Musayyib > Abū Hurayrah

The Prophet ﷺ said "Five things are in accordance with Al Fitra (i.e. the tradition of prophets): to be circumcised, to shave the pelvic region, to pull out the hair of the armpits, to cut short the moustaches, and to clip the nails.'

قُرِئَ عَلَى الْحَارِثِ بْنِ مِسْكِينٍ وَأَنَا أَسْمَعُ عَنِ ابْنِ وَهْبٍ عَنْ يُونُسَ عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْمُسَيِّبِ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ

عَنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ الْفِطْرَةُ خَمْسٌ الِاخْتِتَانُ وَالِاسْتِحْدَادُ وَقَصُّ الشَّارِبِ وَتَقْلِيمُ الْأَظَافِرِ وَنَتْفُ الْإِبْطِ

Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Aʿlá > Muʿtamir > Maʿmar > al-Zuhrī > Ibn al-Musayyib > Abū Hurayrah

"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'The Fitrah are five: Trimming the mustache, plucking the armpit hairs, clipping the nails, removing the pubes, and circumcision.'"

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْأَعْلَى قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا مُعْتَمِرٌ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ مَعْمَرًا عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنِ ابْنِ الْمُسَيِّبِ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «خَمْسٌ مِنَ الْفِطْرَةِ قَصُّ الشَّارِبِ وَنَتْفُ الْإِبْطِ وَتَقْلِيمُ الْأَظَافِرِ وَالِاسْتِحْدَادُ وَالْخِتَانُ»

al-Ḥārith b. Miskīn > Ibn Wahb > Ḥanẓalah b. Abū Sufyān > Nāfiʿ > Ibn ʿUmar

"The deeds connected to the Fitrah are: Clipping the nails, removing the mustache and shaving the pubes."

قُرِئَ عَلَى الْحَارِثِ بْنِ مِسْكِينٍ وَأَنَا أَسْمَعُ عَنِ ابْنِ وَهْبٍ عَنْ حَنْظَلَةَ بْنِ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ عَنْ نَافِعٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ «الْفِطْرَةُ قَصُّ الْأَظْفَارِ وَحَلْقُ الْعَانَةِ وَأَخْذُ الشَّارِبِ»

ʿUbaydullāh b. Saʿīd > Yaḥyá > ʿUbaydullāh > Nāfiʿ > Ibn ʿUmar

The Apostle of Allah ﷺ said: Trim closely the moustache, and let the beard grow.

أَخْبَرَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللهِ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي نَافِعٌ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ «أَحْفُوا الشَّوَارِبَ وَأَعْفُوا اللِّحَى»

ʿAbdullāh b. Muḥammad b. Isḥāq > Yaḥyá b. Saʿīd > Yūsuf b. Ṣuhayb > Ḥabīb b. Yasār > Zayd b. Arqam

"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Whoever does not trim his mustache, he is not from one of us.'"

أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ يُوسُفَ بْنِ صُهَيْبٍ عَنْ حَبِيبِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَرْقَمَ

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ «مَنْ لَمْ يَأْخُذْ مِنْ شَارِبِهِ فَلَيْسَ مِنَّا»

Qutaybah b. Saʿīd > Jaʿfar > Abū ʿImrān al-Jawnī > Anas b. Mālik

"A time limit was set for us, by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, regarding trimming the mustache, clipping the nails and plucking the pubes; we were not to leave that for more than forty days," on one occasion he said: "Forty nights."

أَخْبَرَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا جَعْفَرٌ عَنْ أَبِي عِمْرَانَ الْجَوْنِيِّ عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ قَالَ

وُقَّتَ لَنَا فِي قَصِّ الشَّارِبِ وَتَقْلِيمِ الْأَظْفَارِ وَحَلَقِ الْعَانَةِ وَنَتْفِ الْإِبْطِ أَنْ لَا نَتْرُكَ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ أَرْبَعِينَ يَوْمًا وَقَالَ مَرَّةً أُخْرَى أَرْبَعِينَ لَيْلَةً

ʿAlī b. Ḥujr > Ismāʿīl > Muḥammad b. ʿAmr > Abū Salamah > al-Mughīrah b. Shuʿbah

"Bring me (water for) Wudu'." So I brought him (water for) Wudu', and he performed Wudu' and wiped over his Khuffs. The Shaikh [1] said: "Isma'il (one of the narrators) is Ibn Ja'far bin Abi Kathir Al-Qari. [1] Meaning the author, and it appears that Ibn As-Sunni who heard the text, said this.

أَخْبَرَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ حُجْرٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ عَنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ بْنِ شُعْبَةَ

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ كَانَ إِذَا ذَهَبَ الْمَذْهَبَ أَبَعْدَ قَالَ فَذَهَبَ لِحَاجَتِهِ وَهُوَ فِي بَعْضِ أَسْفَارِهِ فَقَالَ «ائْتِنِي بِوَضُوءٍ» فَأَتَيْتُهُ بِوَضُوءٍ «فَتَوَضَّأَ وَمَسَحَ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ»

ʿAmr b. ʿAlī > Yaḥyá b. Saʿīd > Abū Jaʿfar al-Khaṭmī ʿUmayr b. Yazīd > al-Ḥārith b. Fuḍayl And ʿUmārah b. Khuzaymah b. Thābit > ʿAbd al-Raḥman b. Abū Qurād

"I went out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to an isolated area, and when he wanted to relieve himself he moved far away."

أَخْبَرَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ عَلِيٍّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ الْخَطْمِيُّ عُمَيْرُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي الْحَارِثُ بْنُ فُضَيْلٍ وَعُمَارَةُ بْنُ خُزَيْمَةَ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي قُرَادٍ قَالَ

«خَرَجْتُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ إِلَى الْخَلَاءِ وَكَانَ إِذَا أَرَادَ الْحَاجَةَ أَبَعْدَ»

Isḥāq b. Ibrāhīm > ʿĪsá b. Yūnus > al-Aʿmash > Shaqīq > Ḥudhayfah

"I was walking with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he came to some people's garbage dump and urinated while standing up. I turned to go away, but he called me back (to conceal him), and I was just behind him. Then when he had finished, he performed Wudu' and wiped over his Khuffs."

أَخْبَرَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا عِيسَى بْنُ يُونُسَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ عَنْ شَقِيقٍ عَنْ حُذَيْفَةَ قَالَ

«كُنْتُ أَمْشِي مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَانْتَهَى إِلَى سُبَاطَةِ قَوْمٍ فَبَالَ قَائِمًا فَتَنَحَّيْتُ عَنْهُ فَدَعَانِي فَكُنْتُ عِنْدَ عَقِبِهِ حَتَّى فَرَغَ ثُمَّ تَوَضَّأَ وَمَسَحَ عَلَى خُفَّيْهِ»

Isḥāq b. Ibrāhīm > Ismāʿīl > ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Ṣuhayb > Anas b. Mālik

Whenever the Prophet ﷺ went to the lavatory, he used to say: "Allahumma inni aʿudhu bika min al-khubuthi wal khaba'ith."

أَخْبَرَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ عَنْ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ بْنِ صُهَيْبٍ عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ قَالَ

كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ إِذَا دَخَلَ الْخَلَاءَ قَالَ «اللهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْخُبُثِ وَالْخَبَائِثِ»

Muḥammad b. Manṣūr > Sufyān > al-Zuhrī > ʿAṭāʾ b. Yazīd > Abū Ayyūb al-Anṣārī

"Do not face towards the Qiblah nor turn your backs toward it when defecating or urinating, rather face toward the east or the west."

أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مَنْصُورٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ عَنْ أَبِي أَيُّوبَ الْأَنْصَارِيُّ

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَالَ «لَا تَسْتَقْبِلُوا الْقِبْلَةَ وَلَا تَسْتَدْبِرُوهَا لِغَائِطٍ وَلَا بَوْلٍ وَلَكِنْ شَرِّقُوا أَوْ غَرِّبُوا»

Yaʿqūb b. Ibrāhīm > Ghundar > Maʿmar > Ibn Shihāb > ʿAṭāʾ b. Yazīd > Abū Ayyūb al-Anṣārī

"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'When any one of you goes to defecate, let him not face toward the Qiblah, rather let him face towards the east or the west.'"

أَخْبَرَنَا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا غُنْدَرٌ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا مَعْمَرٌ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ شِهَابٍ عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ عَنْ أَبِي أَيُّوبَ الْأَنْصَارِيُّ قَالَ

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «إِذَا أَتَى أَحَدُكُمُ الْغَائِطَ فَلَا يَسْتَقْبِلِ الْقِبْلَةَ وَلَكِنْ لِيُشَرِّقْ أَوْ لِيُغَرِّبْ»

Qutaybah b. Saʿīd > Mālik > Yaḥyá b. Saʿīd > Muḥammad b. Yaḥyá b. Ḥabbān from his uncle Wāsiʿ b. Ḥabbān > ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUmar

I ascended the roof of the house and saw the Apostle of Allaah ( sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam) sitting on two bricks facing Jerusalem (Bait al-Maqdis) for relieving himself.

أَخْبَرَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ مَالِكٍ عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ يَحْيَى بْنِ حَبَّانَ عَنْ عَمِّهِ وَاسِعِ بْنِ حَبَّانَ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ قَالَ

«لَقَدِ ارْتَقَيْتُ عَلَى ظَهَرِ بَيْتِنَا فَرَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ عَلَى لَبِنَتَيْنِ مُسْتَقْبِلَ بَيْتِ الْمَقْدِسِ لِحَاجَتِهِ»

Sulaymān b. ʿUbaydullāh > Bahz > Shuʿbah > Sulaymān And Manṣūr > Abū Wāʾil > Ḥudhayfah

It was narrated from Hudhifah that the Messenger of Allah ﷺcame to some people's garbage dump and urinated while standing.

أَخْبَرَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا بَهْزٌ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ وَمَنْصُورٍ عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ عَنْ حُذَيْفَةَ

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ «مَشَى إِلَى سُبَاطَةِ قَوْمٍ فَبَالَ قَائِمًا»

al-Muʾammal b. Hishām > Ismāʿīl > Shuʿbah > Sulaymān > Abū Wāʾil > Ḥudhayfah

It was narrated from Hudhifah that the Messenger of Allah ﷺcame to some people's garbage dump and urinated while standing.

أَخْبَرَنَا الْمُؤَمَّلُ بْنُ هِشَامٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ عَنْ حُذَيْفَةَ

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ «أَتَى سُبَاطَةَ قَوْمٍ فَبَالَ قَائِمًا»

ʿAlī b. Ḥajar b. Iyās > Sharīk > al-Miqdām b. Shurayḥ from his father > ʿĀʾishah > Man Ḥaddathakum

"Whoever tells you that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ urinated standing up, do not believe him, for he would not urinate except while squatting."

أَخْبَرَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ حَجَرِ بْنِ إِيَاسٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا شَرِيكٌ عَنِ الْمِقْدَامِ بْنِ شُرَيْحٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ قَالَتْ «§مَنْ حَدَّثَكُمْ

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ بَالَ قَائِمًا فَلَا تُصَدِّقُوهُ مَا كَانَ يَبُولُ إِلَّا جَالِسًا»

Hannād b. al-Sarī > Abū Muʿāwiyah > al-Aʿmash > Zayd b. Wahb > ʿAbd al-Raḥman b. Ḥasanah

"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out to us with a small leather shield in his hand. He put it down, then he sat behind it and urinated toward it. Some of the people said: 'Look, he is urinating like a woman.' He heard that and said: 'Do you not know what happened to the companion of the Children of Israel? If they got any urine on themselves they would clip that part of their garments off. Their companion told them not to do that and he was punished in his grave.'"

أَخْبَرَنَا هَنَّادُ بْنُ السَّرِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي مُعَاوِيَةَ عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ وَهْبٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ حَسَنَةَ قَالَ

خَرَجَ عَلَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَفِي يَدِهِ كَهَيْئَةِ الدَّرَقَةِ فَوَضَعَهَا ثُمَّ جَلَسَ فَبَالَ إِلَيْهَا فَقَالَ بَعْضُ الْقَوْمِ انْظُرُوا يَبُولُ كَمَا تَبُولُ الْمَرْأَةُ فَسَمِعَهُ فَقَالَ «أَوَمَا عَلِمْتَ مَا أَصَابَ صَاحِبَ بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ كَانُوا إِذَا أَصَابَهُمْ شَيْءٌ مِنَ الْبَوْلِ قَطَعُوهُ بِالْمَقَارِيضِ فَنَهَاهُمْ فَعُذِّبَ فِي قَبْرِهِ»

Hannād b. al-Sarī > Wakīʿ > al-Aʿmash > Mujāhid > Ṭāwūs > Ibn ʿAbbās

Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by two graves and said, "Both of them (persons in the grave) are being tortured, and they are not being tortured for a major sin. This one used not to save himself from being soiled with his urine, and the other used to go about with calumnies (among the people to rouse hostilities, e.g., one goes to a person and tells him that so-and-so says about him such-and-such evil things). The Prophet ﷺ then asked for a green leaf of a date-palm tree, split it into two pieces and planted one on each grave and said, "It is hoped that their punishment may be abated till those two pieces of the leaf get dried." (See Hadith No 215, Vol 1).

أَخْبَرَنَا هَنَّادُ بْنُ السَّرِيِّ عَنْ وَكِيعٍ عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ مُجَاهِدًا يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ طَاوُوسٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ

مَرَّ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَلَى قَبْرَيْنِ فَقَالَ إِنَّهُمَا يُعَذَّبَانِ وَمَا يُعَذَّبَانِ فِي كَبِيرٍ أَمَّا هَذَا فَكَانَ لَا يَسْتَنْزِهُ مِنْ بَوْلِهِ وَأَمَّا هَذَا فَكَانَ يَمْشِي بِالنَّمِيمَةِ ثُمَّ دَعَا بِعَسِيبٍ رَطْبٍ فَشَقَّهُ بِاثْنَيْنِ فَغَرَسَ عَلَى هَذَا وَاحِدًا وَعَلَى هَذَا وَاحِدًا ثُمَّ قَالَ «لَعَلَّهُ أَنْ يُخَفَّفَ عَنْهُمَا مَا لَمْ يَيْبَسَا»

Yaḥyá b. Durust > Abū Ismāʿīl > Yaḥyá b. Abū Kathīr > ʿAbdullāh b. Abū Qatādah from his father

"When any one of you urinates, let him not hold his penis in his right hand."

أَخْبَرَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ دُرُسْتَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو إِسْمَاعِيلَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ أَبِي قَتَادَةَ حَدَّثَهُ عَنْ أَبِيهِ

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ «إِذَا بَالَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلَا يَأْخُذْ ذَكَرَهُ بِيَمِينِهِ»

When anyone amongst you enters the privy he should not touch his penis with his right hand.

أَخْبَرَنَا هَنَّادُ بْنُ السَّرِيِّ عَنْ وَكِيعٍ عَنْ هِشَامٍ عَنْ يَحْيَى عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ أَبِي قَتَادَةَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «إِذَا دَخَلَ أَحَدُكُمُ الْخَلَاءَ فَلَا يَمَسَّ ذَكَرَهُ بِيَمِينِهِ»

ʿUbaydullāh b. Saʿīd > Muʿādh b. Hishām from my father > Qatādah > ʿAbdullāh b. Sarjis > Nabī Allāh ﷺ

"None of you should urinate into a burrow in the ground." They said to Qatadah: "Why is it disliked to urinate into a burrow in the ground?" He said: "It is said that these are dwelling-places of the jinn."

أَخْبَرَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللهِ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا مُعَاذُ بْنُ هِشَامٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي عَنْ قَتَادَةَ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ سَرْجِسٍ أَنَّ نَبِيَّ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ

«لَا يَبُولَنَّ أَحَدُكُمْ فِي جُحْرٍ» قِيلَ لِقَتَادَةَ وَمَا يُكْرَهُ مِنَ الْبَوْلِ فِي الْجُحْرِ؟ قَالَ يُقَالُ إِنَّهَا مَسَاكِنُ الْجِنِّ
