Muḥammad b. al-Muthanná > Yaḥyá b. Ḥammād > al-Waḍḍāḥ / Abū ʿAwānah > Yaḥyá Wahū Ibn Abū Sulaym Abū Balj > ʿAmr b. Maymūn > Ibn ʿAbbās

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I will send a man whom Allah and His Messenger love, and whom Allah and His Messenger will never disgrace. He is the most honorable of those with high aspirations." He asked, "Where is Ali, the son of Abu Talib? He is grinding the wheat, so he called him while he was nearly blind and spat in his eyes, then he shook the flag three times and handed it to him. So he brought Safiyyah, the daughter of Huyayy."

أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ حَمَّادٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا الْوَضَّاحُ وَهُوَ أَبُو عَوَانَةَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى وَهُوَ ابْنُ أَبِي سُلَيْمٍ أَبُو بَلْجٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ مَيْمُونٍ أَنَّ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «لَأَبْعَثَنَّ رَجُلًا يُحِبُّ اللهَ وَرَسُولَهُ وَيُحِبُّهُ اللهُ وَرَسُولُهُ لَا يُخْزِيهِ اللهُ أَبَدًا فَأَشْرَفَ مَنِ اسْتَشْرَفَ» قَالَ «أَيْنَ عَلِيٌّ وَهُوَ ابْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ؟ وَهُوَ فِي الرَّحَى يَطْحَنُ فَدَعَاهُ وَهُوَ أَرْمَدُ مَا يَكَادُ أَنْ يُبْصِرَ فَنَفَثَ فِي عَيْنَيْهِ وَهَزَّ الرَّايَةَ ثَلَاثًا فَدَفَعَهَا إِلَيْهِ فَجَاءَ بِصَفِيَّةَ بِنْتِ حُيَيٍّ» مُخْتَصَرٌ
