Ubayy ibn Ka'b said, "They are whipped and stoned, and they are stoned and not whipped, and they are whipped and not stoned." Qatadah, the knowledgeable sheikh, explained it as follows: When a married person commits adultery, they are whipped and then stoned. When an unmarried person commits adultery, they are stoned. And when an unmarried person who has not been chaste commits adultery, they are whipped.
