"O Allah, make it clear to us about alcohol, so the verse was revealed: 'O you who have believed, do not approach prayer while you are intoxicated until you know what you are saying' (Quran 4:43) until the end of the verse. The Prophet ﷺ called upon Umar and recited it to him as if he had not heard it before. Then he said, 'O Allah, make it clear to us about alcohol', so the verse was revealed: 'They ask you about wine and gambling. Say, 'In them is great sin and [yet, some] benefit for people. But their sin is greater than their benefit'' (Quran 2:219). The Prophet ﷺ called upon Umar and recited it to him as if he had not heard it before. Then he said, 'O Allah, make it clear to us about alcohol', so the verse was revealed: 'O you who have believed, indeed, intoxicants, gambling, [sacrificing on] stone altars [to other than Allah], and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid it' (Quran 5:90) until 'Are you then desisting?' (Quran 5:91). Umar said, 'We have desisted, O Lord.'" – Sound

أَخْبَرَنِي أَبُو يَحْيَى أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ السَّمَرْقَنْدِيُّ بِبُخَارَى ثَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ نُصَيْرٍ الْإِمَامُ ثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مَعْمَرٍ ثَنَا حُمَيْدُ بْنُ حَمَّادٍ عَنْ أَبِي الْجَوْزَاءِ ثَنَا حَمْزَةُ الزَّيَّاتُ عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ عَنْ حَارِثَةَ بْنِ مُضَرَّبٍ قَالَ قَالَ

عُمَرُ اللَّهُمَّ بَيِّنْ لَنَا فِي الْخَمْرِ فَنَزَلَتْ {يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لَا تَقْرَبُوا الصَّلَاةَ وَأَنْتُمْ سُكَارَى حَتَّى تَعَلَّمُوا مَا تَقُولُونَ} [النساء 43] إِلَى آخِرِ الْآيَةِ «فَدَعَا النَّبِيُّ ﷺ عُمَرَ فَتَلَاهَا عَلَيْهِ» فَكَأَنَّهَا لَمْ تُوَافِقْ مِنْ عُمَرَ الَّذِي أَرَادَ فَقَالَ اللَّهُمَّ بَيِّنْ لَنَا فِي الْخَمْرِ فَنَزَلَتْ {يَسْأَلُونَكَ عَنِ الْخَمْرِ وَالْمَيْسِرِ قُلْ فِيهِمَا إِثْمٌ كَبِيرٌ وَمَنَافِعُ لِلنَّاسِ وَإِثْمُهُمَا أَكْبَرُ مِنْ نَفْعِهِمَا} [البقرة 219] «فَدَعَا النَّبِيُّ ﷺ عُمَرَ فَتَلَاهَا عَلَيْهِ» فَكَأَنَّهَا لَمْ تُوَافِقْ مِنْ عُمَرَ الَّذِي أَرَادَ فَقَالَ اللَّهُمَّ بَيِّنْ لَنَا فِي الْخَمْرِ فَنَزَلَتْ {يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِنَّمَا الْخَمْرُ وَالْمَيْسِرُ وَالْأَنْصَابُ وَالْأَزْلَامُ رِجْسٌ مِنْ عَمَلِ الشَّيْطَانِ فَاجْتَنِبُوهُ} [المائدة 90] حَتَّى انْتَهَى إِلَى قَوْلِهِ {فَهَلْ أَنْتُمْ مُنْتَهُونَ} [المائدة 91] «فَدَعَا النَّبِيُّ ﷺ عُمَرَ فَتَلَاهَا عَلَيْهِ» فَقَالَ عُمَرُ انْتَهَيْنَا يَا رَبِّ «هَذَا حَدِيثٌ صَحِيحُ الْإِسْنَادِ وَلَمْ يُخَرِّجَاهُ» هذا صحيح – صحيح
