Ṣāliḥ b. Muḥammad b. Ḥabīb al-Ḥāfiẓ > Shaybān b. Farrūkh b. Abū Shaybah > Abān > Qatādah > Zurārah b. Awfá > Saʿd b. Hishām > ʿĀʾishah

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to perform the Witr prayer with three rakahs, and he would do the taslim only in the last rakah. And this is the Witr prayer of Amir al-Muminin, Umar b. al-Khattab" It was from because of this what the people of Madinah also adopted.

مَا أَخْبَرْنَاهُ أَبُو نَصْرٍ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ سَهْلٍ الْفَقِيهُ بِبُخَارَى ثنا صَالِحُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ حَبِيبٍ الْحَافِظُ ثنا شَيْبَانُ بْنُ فَرُّوخَ بْنِ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ثنا أَبَانُ عَنْ قَتَادَةَ عَنْ زُرَارَةَ بْنِ أَوْفَى عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ هِشَامٍ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ قَالَتْ

«كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يُوتِرُ بِثَلَاثٍ لَا يُسَلِّمُ إِلَّا فِي آخِرِهِنَّ» وَهَذَا وِتْرُ أَمِيرِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ «وَعَنْهُ أَخَذَهُ أَهْلُ الْمَدِينَةِ»
