my father > Muḥammad b. Ḥassān al-Azraq > Sufyān b. ʿUyaynah > al-Zuhrī > ʿAṭāʾ b. Yazīd > Abū Ayyūb

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Witr is a confirmed duty; whoever wishes may perform it with three (units), and whoever wishes may perform it with five, and whoever would like to perform witr with one (unit), let him perform it with one.”

فَحَدَّثَنَاهُ أَبُو بَكْرٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ الْعَبَّاسِ الْمُسْتَمْلِي حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ حَسَّانَ الْأَزْرَقُ ثنا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ عَنْ أَبِي أَيُّوبَ قَالَ

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «الْوِتْرُ حَقٌّ فَمَنْ شَاءَ أَوْتَرَ بِثَلَاثٍ وَمِنْ شَاءَ أَوْتَرَ بِخَمْسٍ وَمَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يُوتِرَ بِوَاحِدَةٍ فَلْيُوتِرْ بِوَاحِدَةٍ» .
