Danger of Wearing Ta’weez

Popular
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Amulet (a.k.a ta’weez) is haraam and strictly prohibited in Islam. So much so that it’s proven to be shirk. We have authentic aḥādīth from Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ that talks about it’s prohibition.

It was narrated from Uqbah ibn Aamir al Juhani that a group came to the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ [to swear their allegiance (bay’ah) to him]. He accepted the bay’ah of nine of them but not of one of them. They said, O Messenger of Allāh, you accepted the bay’ah of nine but not of this one. He said, He is wearing an amulet. The man put his hand (in his shirt) and took it off, then he (the Prophetﷺ) accepted his bay’ah. He said, Whoever wears an amulet has committed shirk.

Musnad Ahmed  1

Narrated Abu Bashir Al-Ansari: That he was in the company of Allāh’s Apostle on some of his journeys. (The sub-narrator ‘Abdullah adds, “I think that Abu Bashir also said, ‘And the people were at their sleeping places.”) Allāh’s Apostle sent a messenger ordering: There shall not remain any necklace of string or any other kind of necklace round the necks of camels except it is cut off.

Sahih al-Bukhari 2 & Sahih Muslim  3

Why is it considered to be a major problem in Islam? Amongst many other reasons, the main one is, people say “through this amulet my supplications are answered or I’m protected” – instead of relying on Allāh Glory be to Him as source of strength and protection. Many people, when feel insecure they start looking for “ta’weez” thinking it will save them. This is amongst the tricks of shaytaan, because he knows a Muslim will not worship an idol but this type of shirk works on them (i.e, Muslims).

Do we not know what did ‘Umar Ibn Al-Khattaab may Allāh be pleased with him said to the black stone (commonly known as hijra al-aswad – literally means the black stone) at ka’ba?

“No doubt, I know that you are a stone and can neither benefit anyone nor harm anyone. Had I not seen Allāh’s Apostle kissing you I would not have kissed you.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 4

Do we have doubts on imān of ‘Umar may Allāh be pleased with him? If you have doubts, you better make your `aqeedah (belief) clear because he may Allāh be pleased with him is one those who were given glad-tidings of Jannah 5. If wearing amulet was of that importance, would you not expect Prophet ﷺ hanging part of this stone around his neck or arm? but we do not find any such narration in all the collections of aḥādīth.

I would also like to mention following ḥadīth that is directed to us and anyone who comes till the day of judgement.

Ruwaifi’ bin Thabit said: The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: “O Ruwaifi’, you may live for a long time after me, so tell the people that whoever ties up his beard, or twists it, or hangs an amulet, or cleans himself (after relieving himself) with animal dung or bones, Muḥammad has nothing to do with him.”

Sunan an-Nasai 6 Sunan Abu Dawood 7 Musnad Ahmed 8

At last, I would like to quote an ayah from the Noble Qur’an where Allāh Glory be to Him is asking a rhetorical question,

Is He [not best] who responds to the desperate one when he calls upon Him and removes evil and makes you inheritors of the earth? Is there a deity with Allāh? Little do you remember.

Surah an-Naml 27:62 9

Many people do not like to be told that they are committing shirk. The issue is, they will be not judged by their label (i.e, Muslim) instead they will be asked about their `aqeedah (belief). Also, many people run their businesses by becoming “_peer_” – calling people to shirk – know that they are all fake and if they die without repenting, they will become fuel of hellfire

O you who have believed, protect yourselves and your families from a Fire whose fuel is people and stones, over which are [appointed] angels, harsh and severe; they do not disobey Allāh in what He commands them but do what they are commanded.

Surah at-Tahrim 66:6  10
