Salim ibn 'Abdullah reported from his father that 'Umar used to say to his sons, "Separate in the morning and do not meet together in the same house. I fear that you might split up or that some evil may take place between you."

حَدَّثَنَا مَخْلَدُ بْنُ مَالِكٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مَغْرَاءَ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا الْفَضْلُ بْنُ مُبَشِّرٍ، عَنْ سَالِمِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، كَانَ عُمَرُ يَقُولُ لِبَنِيهِ: إِذَا أَصْبَحْتُمْ فَتَبَدَّدُوا، وَلاَ تَجْتَمِعُوا فِي دَارٍ وَاحِدَةٍ، فَإِنِّي أَخَافُ عَلَيْكُمْ أَنْ تَقَاطَعُوا، أَوْ يَكُونَ بَيْنَكُمْ شَرٌّ.

Ibn 'Umar saw a shepherd with some sheep in a bad place and saw a place which was better than it. He told him, "Woe to you, shepherd! Move them! I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'Every shepherd is responsible for his flock.'"

حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ خَالِدٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا بَكْرٌ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَجْلاَنَ، أَنَّ وَهْبَ بْنَ كَيْسَانَ أَخْبَرَهُ، وَكَانَ وَهْبٌ أَدْرَكَ عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ عُمَرَ، أَنَّ ابْنَ عُمَرَ رَأَى رَاعِيًا وَغَنَمًا فِي مَكَانٍ قَبِيحٍ وَرَأَى مَكَانًا أَمْثَلَ مِنْهُ، فَقَالَ لَهُ: وَيْحَكَ، يَا رَاعِي، حَوِّلْهَا، فَإِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: كُلُّ رَاعٍ مَسْئُولٌ عَنْ رَعِيَّتِهِ.

Ibn 'Abbas reported that the Prophet ﷺ said, "We do not give a bad example. The one who takes back his gift is like the dog who returns to his own vomit."

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ: لَيْسَ لَنَا مَثَلُ السَّوْءِ، الْعَائِدُ فِي هِبَتِهِ، كَالْكَلْبِ يَرْجِعُ فِي قَيْئِهِ.
