Atonement before transgression

Qutaybah b. Saʿīd > Ḥammād / Ibn Zayd > Ghaylān b. Jarīr > Abū Burdah > Abū Mūsá al-Ashʿarī

I went to Messenger of Allah ﷺ along with a group of people from (the tribe of) Al-Ashʿari, asking for mounts. The Prophet ﷺ said, "By Allah, I will not give you anything to ride, and I have nothing to mount you on." We stayed there as long as Allah wished, and after that, some camels were brought to the Prophet and he ordered that we be given three camels. When we set out, some of us said to others, "Allah will not bless us, as we all went to Messenger of Allah ﷺ asking him for mounts, and although he had sworn that he would not give us mounts, he did give us." So we returned to the Prophet; and mentioned that to him. He said, "I have not provided you with mounts, but Allah has. By Allah, Allah willing, if I ever take an oath, and then see that another is better than the first, I make expiration for my (dissolved) oath, and do what is better and make expiration."

أَخْبَرَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادٌ وَهُوَ ابْنُ زَيْدٍ عَنْ غَيْلَانَ بْنِ جَرِيرٍ عَنْ أَبِي بُرْدَةَ عَنْ أَبِي مُوسَى الْأَشْعَرِيِّ قَالَ

أَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فِي يَعْنِي رَهْطٍ مِنَ الْأَشْعَرِيِّينَ نَسْتَحْمِلُهُ فَقَالَ «وَاللهِ لَا أَحْمِلُكُمْ وَمَا عِنْدِي مَا أَحْمِلُكُمْ» ثُمَّ لَبِثْنَا مَا شَاءَ اللهُ فَأُتِيَ بِإِبِلٍ فَأَمَرَ لَنَا بِثَلَاثَةِ ذَوْدٍ فَلَمَّا انْطَلَقْنَا قَالَ بَعْضُنَا لِبَعْضٍ لَا يُبَارِكُ اللهُ لَنَا أَتَيْنَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ نَسْتَحْمِلُهُ فَحَلَفَ لَا يَحْمِلُنَا فَحَمَلْنَا قَالَ أَبُو مُوسَى فَأَتَيْنَا النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَذَكَرْنَا ذَلِكَ لَهُ فَقَالَ «مَا أَنَا حَمَلْتُكُمْ بَلِ اللهُ حَمَلَكُمْ إِنِّي وَاللهِ إِنْ شَاءَ اللهُ لَا أَحْلِفُ عَلَى يَمِينٍ فَأَرَى غَيْرَهَا خَيْرًا مِنْهَا إِلَّا كَفَّرْتُ عَنْ يَمِينِي وَأَتَيْتُ الَّذِي هُوَ خَيْرٌ»

Qutaybah b. Saʿīd > Mālik > Suhayl from his father > Abū Hurayrah

He who took an oath and then found another thing better than (this) should expiate for the oath (broken) by him and do (the better thing).

أَخْبَرَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ مَالِكٍ عَنْ سُهَيْلٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ «مَنْ حَلَفَ عَلَى يَمِينٍ فَرَأَى الَّذِي هُوَ خَيْرٌ فَلْيُكَفِّرْ عَنْ يَمِينِهِ وَلْيَفْعَلْ»

ʿAmr b. ʿAlī > Yaḥyá > ʿUbaydullāh b. al-Akhnas > ʿAmr b. Shuʿayb from his father from his grandfather

the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, said: "Whoever swears an oath then sees that something else is better than it, let him do that which is better and offer expiation for what he swore about. "

أَخْبَرَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ عَلِيٍّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللهِ بْنُ الْأَخْنَسِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ شُعَيْبٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ جَدِّهِ

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ «مَنْ حَلَفَ عَلَى يَمِينٍ فَرَأَى غَيْرَهَا خَيْرًا مِنْهَا فَلْيُكَفِّرْ عَنْ يَمِينِهِ وَلْيَأْتِ الَّذِي هُوَ خَيْرٌ»

Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Aʿlá > al-Muʿtamir from his father > al-Ḥasan > ʿAbd al-Raḥman b. Samurah

"If any one of you swears an oath, then he sees something better than it, let him offer expiation for his oath, and look at what is better and do it."

أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْأَعْلَى قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا الْمُعْتَمِرُ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ سَمُرَةَ

عَنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ «إِذَا حَلَفَ أَحَدُكُمْ عَلَى يَمِينٍ فَرَأَى غَيْرَهَا خَيْرًا مِنْهَا فَلْيُكَفِّرْ عَنْ يَمِينِهِ وَلْيَنْظُرْ إِلَى الَّذِي هُوَ خَيْرٌ فَلْيَأْتِهِ»

Aḥmad b. Sulaymān > ʿAffān > Jarīr b. Ḥāzim > al-Ḥasan > ʿAbd al-Raḥman b. Samurah

"The Messenger of Allah said: 'If you swear an oath, offer expiation for your oath, then do that which is better.'"

أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرُ بْنُ حَازِمٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ الْحَسَنَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ سَمُرَةَ قَالَ

قَالَ لِي رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «إِذَا حَلَفْتَ عَلَى يَمِينٍ فَكَفِّرْ عَنْ يَمِينِكَ ثُمَّ ائْتِ الَّذِي هُوَ خَيْرٌ»
