When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ conquered Mecca, some people from the Quraysh came to him and said, "There are people from our followers and tribes who have no interest in religion except to escape from our livestock and agriculture." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "By Allah, O people of Quraysh, you will establish prayer and give zakat, or else I will send a man who will strike your necks for the sake of religion." Then he said, "It is either me or the one mending shoes." Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "And I am the one mending the shoes of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ." – Sound Chain per Muslim

أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ الشَّيْبَانِيُّ بِالْكُوفَةِ ثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ حَازِمٍ الْغِفَارِيُّ ثَنَا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ وَأَبُو غَسَّانَ قَالَا ثَنَا شَرِيكٌ عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ عَنْ رِبْعِيِّ بْنِ حِرَاشٍ ثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ قَالَ

لَمَّا افْتَتَحَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مَكَّةَ أَتَاهُ نَاسٌ مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ فَقَالُوا إِنَّهُ قَدْ لَحِقَ بِكَ نَاسٌ مِنْ مَوَالِينَا وَأَرِقَّائِنَا لَيْسَ لَهُمْ رَغْبَةٌ فِي الدِّينِ إِلَّا فِرَارًا مِنْ مَوَاشِينَا وَزَرْعِنَا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «وَاللَّهِ يَا مَعْشَرَ قُرَيْشٍ لَتُقِيمُنَّ الصَّلَاةَ وَلَتُؤْتُنَّ الزَّكَاةَ أَوْ لَأَبْعَثَنَّ عَلَيْكُمْ رَجُلًا فَيَضْرِبُ أَعْنَاقَكُمْ عَلَى الدِّينِ» ثُمَّ قَالَ «أَنَا أَوْ خَاصِفُ النَّعْلِ» قَالَ عَلِيٌّ «وَأَنَا أَخْصِفُ نَعْلَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ» على شرط مسلم – على شرط مسلم
