About Mustadrak al-Hakim

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Al-Mustadrak ʿala al-Ṣaḥīḥayn (Mustadrak al-Hakim) is a major ḥadīth compilation by Imam Abu ʿAbdullah Muḥammad ibn ʿAbdullah al-Hakim al-Naysaburi (d. 405 AH / 1014 CE). It was written as a supplement to the two most authentic ḥadīth collections in Sunni Islam, Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim.

In this work, al-Hakim collected narrations that were not included in the Sahihayn but which he considered to meet the authenticity standards of Bukhari, Muslim, or both. The collection contains around 9,000 ḥadīths, arranged across thematic chapters covering Islamic law, belief, ethics, and daily practice.

Later ḥadīth scholars reviewed al-Hakim’s grading, most notably Imam al-Dhahabi (d. 748 AH), who critically examined many of the narrations and agreed or disagreed with al-Hakim’s assessments. His commentary has become one of the most important references for evaluating the authenticity of the ḥadīth in this work.

In this website, we use the commentary and grading of Imam al-Dhahabi, as it provides a more critical and widely accepted assessment of the narrations found in Al-Mustadrak ʿala al-Ṣaḥīḥayn.
